ARGENTINA –

2004 Trapiche Medalla Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml – $29.99
Wine Enthusiast, Dec 2006: “Mildly dusty and herbal on the nose, but not the least bit green or weedy. Flavors of tobacco, cassis and blackberry carry accents of cedar and vanilla, while the soft tannins make for a full, easy mouthfeel. Aged 18 months in French oak but it’s not overly toasty or dark.”

ARGENTINA – MENDOZA

2003 Bodegas Salentein Pinot Noir 750ml – $21.99
JJ Buckley, Nov 2008: “Medium ruby core with a pale pink rim highlighted with garnet.Deliciously smooth caramel and milk chocolate aromas are accented bylight violet scents, all surrounding a dense core of ripe blackcherries. Much bigger in the mouth than the nose implies with richcherry fruit, dark scorched earth and silky milk chocolate flavors.Medium to full bodied with hints of baking spices and a long finish.”

2005 Poesia Pasodoble 750ml – $12.99
Wine Advocate, Dec 2007, 90 points: “The 2005 Pasodoble is a blend of 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Malbec, and 33% Syrah sourced from a 20 year old vineyard and aged for 12 months in French oak. Dark ruby/purple-colored, it exhibits an expressive perfume of cedar, spice box, pepper, blackcurramts, black cherry, and blueberry. Smooth-textured, elegant, and tasty, this nicely balanced Bordeaux look-alike can be enjoyed now and over the next 5-7 years. It is an outstanding value.Bodegas Poesia is owned by Bordeaux proprietors Helene Garcin and Patrice Leveque, with Leveque doubling as winemaker with consultation from Dr. Alain Raynaud.”
JJ Buckley, Oct 2008: “Dark ruby core with a lighter pink rim. Sweet blackberry and cherry aromas up front are surrounded by smoke, soy sauce, dried anise and a hint of barbecue ribs. Medium bodied in the mouth with ripe fruit flavors of blueberry, black cherry and raspberry. The tannins are fairly small and ripe, making this an approachable wine that is ready to drink (but with enough oomph to last another 2 – 4 years). Nice lingering finish with a touch of Good & Plenty candy licorice.”

2006 Trapiche Broquel Malbec 750ml – $13.99
Wine Enthusiast, Aug 2008: “For several vintages running Broquel has nudged the border between very good and excellent, but as in years past the ’06 is a touch tangy and racy, with black cherry, plum and berry flavors. It’s bold, zippy and quite high-toned, but still it’s very competent and held together.”

AUSTRALIA –

2005 Rosemount Cabernet / Merlot 750ml – $9.99
JJ Buckley, Nov 2008: “Dark ruby core with a lighter rim. Fruity and bright aromas of black cherry with smoke and earth wrapped around it. Smooth, easy entry on the palate with bright acid making it fresh and easy to drink. There is a touch of baker’s chocolate with black cherry and raspberries and a nice punch of chewy tannin supporting the body.”

AUSTRALIA – SOUTH AUSTRALIA

2006 Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet 750ml – $8.99
Wine Advocate, Oct 2007, 91 points: “The Cabernet and Shiraz blends begin with the 2006 Shiraz (70%) – Cabernet Sauvignon (22%) “Koonunga Hill”. Purple-colored, the wine offers meaty black currant, blackberry, and blueberry aromas. On the palate the wine exhibits remarkable focus and structure for its humble price. The fruit is grapy and primary as well as intensely flavored. It should evolve for several years and drink well through 2022 if not longer. It is a fantastic value. As an aside, Peter Gago presented a 1976 Koonunga Hill to demonstrate the aging potential of this cuvee. The wine was showing a bit of age aromatically but none on the palate. At age 31, this wine (which probably cost several dollars on release) is right at its peak (my score 94 points). Penfolds, arguably Australia’s most famous winery, continues to perform at a high level under the leadership of Head Winemaker, Peter Gago.”

2004 Wolf Blass Cabernet Sauvignon / Shiraz Yellow Label 750ml – $8.99
JJ Buckley, Nov 2008: “Dark purple core with a ruby rim. Bright aromas of plum, black cherry and raspberry with a lighter candied violet note. Easy, smooth entry on the palate with nice balance acidity. Round and ripe with light white pepper around a core of dark fruit. Very approachable tannins and a nice dark chocolate and black cherry finish.”

CHILE – RAPEL VALLEY

2005 Casa Lapostolle Syrah Cuvee Alexandre 750ml – $25.99
Wine Spectator, Mar 2008, 91 points: “Dark, but pure and focused, with espresso-tinged tannins carrying the dark plum, briar, fig cake and bittersweet cocoa notes. Long, muscular finish is fine-grained and should cellar nicely. Drink now through 2010. 1,500 cases imported.”

FRANCE – BORDEAUX

2005 Beaulieu Comtes de Tastes 750ml – $18.99
Wine Advocate, Apr 2008: “Made from a blend of 50% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc, and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, this is a sensational value-priced wine. It reveals a dense ruby/purple color along with a sweet nose of white chocolate, black cherries, cassis, and earth, excellent texture, medium body, and soft tannins. This beauty represents a sensational bargain-priced Bordeaux to enjoy over the next 5-6 years.”

2004 Chateau Beausejour 750ml – $16.99
JJ Buckley, Dec 2008: “Medium ruby core with a pink rim. Plum, black cherry and vanilla aromas with a touch of earth. Medium bodied with good black cherry fruit flavors. Approachable tannins with some lingering toasty oak.”

2000 Chateau Laroque 750ml – $35.99
Wine Enthusiast, Jun 2005, 90 points: “Gems like this from the stellar 2000 vintage are still available to consumers willing to explore lesser-known chateaus. Concentrated scents of black cherries and cassis emerge from the glass, followed by admirably pure flavors of black cherries and vanilla. It’s supple enough to drink now, but appears to have the stuffing to go another 5–10 years. A long, berry-filled finish caps off this find.”

2003 Mouton Bordeaux Superieur 750ml – $14.99
Wine Advocate, Apr 2005: “Run by the dynamic Jean-Philippe Janoueix (Chambrun, La Confession, and La Croix St.-Georges are his other garagiste estates), this is a 50-acre vineyard planted with 80% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Yields in 2003 were 20 hectoliters per hectare. An excellent effort, it offers up scents of spicy oak, black currants, licorice, and smoke. Round and rich, with a broad, expansive entry on the palate, a layered impression, and a supple finish, this is a delicious claret to enjoy over the next 5-7 years.”

FRANCE – BURGUNDY

2005 Bruno Clair Marsannay Chardonnay 750ml – $25.99

2005 Domaine Laboure Roi Bourgogne Blanc Maximum Chardonnay 750ml – $13.99

Wine Advocate, Aug 2008, 90 points: “The estate’s 2006 Salice Salentino Liante (80% Negroamaro, 20% Malvasia) is another beauty. Made in a very sweet, ripe style, it offers notes of plums, prunes, leather, tar, smoke and earthiness. It should continue to drink well over the next several years. Stephen Tanzer, Jul 2008, 90 points: “Bright medium ruby. Effusively fruity aromas of watermelon and pomegranate, with a delicate salty edge. Bright and fresh on the palate, offering enticing flavors of sour red cherry, smoke and minerals. Finishes tangy, pure and long. I’d consider lightly chilling this very tasty wine on a hot summer day.”
JJ Buckley, Aug 2008: “Medium purple/ruby core with a bright ruby rim.
